” Memory box “

It’s been hours since it started raining, the sky turned dark but every now and then a strong light followed by a loud strike crossed the horizon in a hurry.

She’s never been afraid of thunder but the noise of the heavy rain drops bashing the window from each side made her feel nervous.

There were tens of boxes around the room, some of them already sealed and some just half full…she felt like she was packing up her entire life, closing a chapter but excited of what was waiting for her on the other side of that red door she kept dreaming about for the past four nights.

…she wasn’t sad for leaving, after all this promotion was what she always wanted, the best opportunity to prove what she could achieve.

It would be the first time she would ever leave her hometown…the only place she’s ever known, the only place she called home and the only people she felt close to.

She turned the radio a little bit louder to cover the sound of the storm from outside and continued packing.

Without even realising she picked up a small red box, slightly heavy and wanted to pack it up with the rest of her book collection…when by mistake a small yellow note fell out of it.

She gave the box another look and memories came back flooding her heart with joy and pain…all at the same time.

…she picked up the note, “ Love you forever “, she smiled.

She couldn’t remember how old she was when she fell in love for the first time but she remembered every little detail about it…when she first saw him in the schoolyard with his friends, how she felt when he looked at her with his curious eyes, how she couldn’t stop her heart from following him…how sweet his first kiss was, the old tree on the hill where they’ve carved their eternal love and how broken she felt when it all ended.

‘All these emotions, from a single piece of paper’, she was surprised she still remembered so much and how a small piece of memory can bring to life feelings you thought you’ve lost a long time ago.

She opened the red box and in a second, she saw her past unveiling in front of her eyes…every object, letter, picture in that box told a story….parts of her life long forgotten or just buried deep somewhere because they’ve only brought tears.

Why was she keeping all these?

For a moment she couldn’t understand why people keep memories of their painful past…’we should all just keep what made us happy’, she thought.

She turned to the window and looked outside…the rain seemed to have stopped and the sun was trying desperately to break through the clouds and burst into a beautiful warm light.

She picked up the box once again…her past and her future, all in one small red box.

…between pictures and letters she found two very old cinema tickets…her eyes smiled and she felt joy and love overwhelming her completely.

Two cinema tickets…

The first ever movie they saw together… she remembered the cold air, the long walk holding hands…and an empty cinema with just the two of them watching a movie they will never forget.

She wondered if he would still remember that night…she would definitely ask him once he would get home!

She closed her eyes for a moment and she felt love…love for the first boy who ever kissed her…love for the one who stole her heart for the first time…love for the memories of the past…love for the tears she once lost…love for what she became… love for The One that finally found her…love for him, who was now her present and her future.

She felt lost and she was found…

…she realised now why she kept that box full of memories of joy and heartbreak…because what she once thought she’ve lost was never really hers…it was just a part of her journey…a path that brought her where she was today…happy and in love with the man who once held her hand in an empty cinema and didn’t let go since…

Note from the author:

What we lost it never was truly ours…but if we lost it, maybe it was to learn how to appreciate better, next time.

Everything joins a circle, like a lost and found box…some things are meant to be lost so they can be found.

Just trust that the journey you’re following has a purpose…for you to find your own heaven!
