‘Rabbit hole’ Day #3

The rabbit hole
The rabbit hole

The sound of hefty steps above made him stop…

It must have been his imagination.

The heavy storm was bashing the windows,

Someone left it open…but no one else lived there.

Through the darkness of the night he saw a shadow…

followed by a bitter cold touch of his shoulders,

He turned, frightened to the bone.

The shade of a creature was swallowed by the ground…

Descending with great speed to the bottom of his feet,

He saw the old and broken past…

Looking down the rabbit hole!

This post it’s a response to Andy’s Dark | Side | Thursday

I hope you’ve enjoyed a few seconds of fright-night:)

‘Black Dream’

Black dream
Black dream

This is Part Three of a short story written for the Dark | Side | Thursday hosted by Andy.

To read the first two chapters please click here…Part One Dark Corner and Part Two The Passage🙂

…with every step she took, her salvation seemed to become more real.

She could only see a part of the bridge, which made her doubt herself and the possibility of reaching the other side.

Her nemesis now had a face…a rigid look with strong arms and determined to decide her faith.
As she saw his sword crossing through the air towards her chest, for a moment she saw her entire life flashing before her eyes…

“ she was twelve when she realised that life will never be the same again…that everything she hold dear was taken brutally away from her.
The years that came after were filled with darkness…loneliness and terrible choices which she never seemed to mind, until she met him.
He pulled her out of the dirty mud, washed her sins away and gave her a choice…she had many doubts about herself and never stopped questioning his reasons for helping her.
Life somehow turned around for a split of a second, but just until her past caught up with her. She had to pay her dues…sins don’t just wash away with water, she always said”

…and today her day has come.
She needed to live…she needed to hope if she ever wanted to see him again.
She raised her sword against her punisher and cut into his flesh…when she pulled back, her blade was dripping blood.
Her arms felt an intense strength that filled her whole spirit…she looked at the bridge again…this time she would have to run.
The choice was simple…a possible salvation or a painful death.
She turned around…she wanted to live…
She raced to the bridge and before she could step across to the other side, she heard his voice screaming her name.
Nothing could stop her now…
There was only darkness on the other side…and a warm voice pulling her across.
…suddenly she felt a heavy touch on her shoulder, she looked back…her nemesis was bleeding heavily but still had the power to follow her to the bridge.
This was the moment she would remember forever…
She pulled her blade closer and with fear and pain forced it into his chest, right through his heart.
His dark eyes became empty as he fell back towards his death…
…all turned into black.

Blood Red
Blood Red

Beth woke up screaming…the sound of the heavy rain scared her even more.

It was just a dream…

I’ve never written anything dark before…it was an interesting challenge which I will continue to explore because it helps my writing develop:)

I hope you’ve enjoyed the story…should I say…the dream!

If you read all three parts I would love to know your thoughts on it…did you realise it was just a dream?

‘The Passage’

Join us and cross the boundaries of your comfort zone…discover your other side!

This post it’s linked to a challenge that Andy started a few weeks ago…I love to go beyond my usual style of writing and uncover something new!

Part One of this story you can find it here…Dark Corner.

2015-06-14 08.47.44-1

The wind stopped…it was quiet.

…her heart started racing, her mind was juggling several scenarios…none of them were in her favour.

She knew he was getting closer but all she could hear was the sound of the sword cutting through the heavy fog, which made it impossible for her to see her nemesis.

Only if she could have found the house…she would have been saved.

It was too late…there was no time to run.

She looked up, her eyes turned red…she felt a sudden power rushing through her veins; maybe it was the impossible situation she found herself in or just the intense desire to stay alive.

She pulled out her weapon…made a few steps back, not because she wanted to run…but because she had to defend herself no matter what the consequences might be.

As his steps were more real…she could now see a shape of a man walking towards her, she could hear his breathing…she couldn’t stop stepping back.

All of the sudden she realised what was at the end of the alley…the passage.

She never experienced it before…her ancestors told fables about it…

It never crossed her mind that the passage was real.

The legend was saying that whoever crosses the bridge will have a chance to undo all the wrongs in their past life…was that true?

It didn’t matter now…an opportunity presented itself…she had a choice; stay and fight with the possibility of defeat or believe that the passage might undo all the dark corners she took throughout her life.

Maybe she had a chance…the light on the other side could be her salvation…

‘Dark corner’

2015-05-31 18.11.45

“…the wind was cold and in some ways brutal.

It was dark…with no stars on the sky to guide you.

The street was filled with the sound of fallen leaves being swept back and forward…

As far as you could see…which wasn’t really far, there was no one and nothing…just a cold and lonely dance of the trees along the road. …she stopped for a second, looked around…nothing seemed familiar!

That couldn’t be…she knew this street like the back of her hand, every corner, every rock…every tree and dusty bench. Something wasn’t right…

Before something goes wrong, you have a strange feeling, like a nod in your stomach or like a difficulty to breath…too many things cross your mind and you stop thinking clearly.

She felt tired…if she was in the wrong place, this will be the end. There was no time to waste!

She looked at the time…11:15pm…to late to call for help, she will have to do this on her own.

Only if she could find the place! 2015-05-31 18.08.09

On the other side there was a small alley…too dark to see if it led anywhere.

She looked at the time again…11:16pm.

No more thinking…she crossed the street and walked down the alley.

Since she left the house this was the only moment she realised a flashlight would have been very useful.

The alley was narrow and seemed very long…high wooden fence on one side and brick, probably red, high wall on the other, which somehow was a useful shield against the cold wind.

All she could hear were her own steps…slow but heavy.

…a sudden sound, a few meters behind, made her stop.

She wasn’t alone…the one thing she was running from might just catch up with her.

She turned…too dark to see!

…an unexpected vertical light appeared for a second followed by the sound of a sword being pulled out of its scabbard.

This was it…her faith for stepping over to the dark side…

I would like to link this post to a very interesting challenge called

‘The tree with a thousand stories’

          Story 4

“ Do you choose your cradle or it chooses you?”

…where is home?

It was a question that often came up but they never really tried to find an answer; it never was the right time to think about it and it always touched a nerve in both of them when someone else was asking.

The way they were living was a choice…their choice and throughout the years both of them agreed that when the time is right or when a place will feel like home they will stop traveling and maybe “grow roots”, as others do.

Seeing the world was what they always wanted…discovering the unknown was like a drug for both of them and even if the wonders of the Universe made them feel at home wherever they’ve been, they never felt like belonging.

What it feels like to belong?

Some say it’s an invisible link between your soul and a place…

They never believed that the soul could ever be pinned to one place…the soul it’s free, it’s free to travel from one place to the other, from one time to the next…

How can it belong?

Some try to find an answer all their life and eventually give up and settle down…they stop in one place and surrender their soul to it.

They both believed that the soul should choose their resting place…the place that some day they will truly call home, where their journey will end and a new chapter in their life will begin.

It was the coldest morning of the month…winter was still the master of the ground, spreading its thick white cover followed by a frosty heavy wind.

They were driving through this small town, when something out of place, captivated their attention…

…an old, strange shaped tree on top of a small hill looking down into the heart of this small and somehow charming town.

She asked him to stop the car…mainly because she felt somehow pulled to this place and because he was driving for six hours and they both needed some rest.

“ Doesn’t that look interesting?”, she asked with a curious voice.

“ What does?”, he was paying too much attention to the heavy snow on the road and saw the tree up the hill just as he turned around.

“ That tree…it’s odd, but I feel the need to walk up there and look at it more closely “, she said very determined to feed her curiosity.

“ It’s very cold and I am worried about the car…we should find a B&B and maybe stay over night”, he said with a serious voice.

She agreed with the condition that once the snow and the wind will stop he will accompany her in a walk up the hill to that mysterious tree.

“ Fine…I am not sure why we have to do this but you are making me eager to find out the story of that tree…if it has one “, he said smiling.

There was something about this place that made both of them feel at peace, which it wasn’t a well-known feeling for either of them. In their travels they had their own share of adventures, quests, amazing discoveries, dangerous journeys which made them feel more alive than anything but nothing made them feel…peace…just wonderful silence that fuels the soul.

They’ve waited a couple of hours, had some breakfast at a nearby B&B and once the sky cleared and the snow became more crisp at every step…they walked back along the road until they’ve reached a clear path towards the hill.

For the first time, they didn’t speak too much with each other…both of them were somehow fascinated by the look and shape of the tree.

“ It looks like it’s one of a kind…but at the same time it belongs to this scenery “, she said with a light in her eyes holding his hand tighter than before.

“ You’re right…I don’t remember seeing anything like it “, he was starting to get more interested in what they will find once they’ve reached the top.

It felt like it took longer than it should have….maybe because as they’ve got closer and closer, they’ve became more intrigued questioning more and more…not just the tree itself but their intentions.

Why was this place more special than any other?

Once they’ve made it to the top, the only thing they could think of was where to sit down and rest…from the bottom of the hill it didn’t look like a long walk but the thick snow made it harder and longer.

After a few minutes of catching their breath, here they were…intrigued.

The tree looked down into the heart of this small, unknown town that seemed the most peaceful place on Earth… and it held all the history of all the people, that left a mark on its trunk.

“ It’s fascinating…”, she said running her hand through all the carvings on the tree.

“ All the stories that this tree holds…if it could only speak…” he said smiling.

“ There is so much life in this one place and so much peace as you look down “, she turned around and gave the town another look…but it wasn’t just a look, it was so much more than that.

“ This is it… “ , she said with a slight hint of joy in her voice.

He looked at her amazed…amazed because he felt the same…

“ I never felt like this anywhere before…for the first time I know that we belong here “, she couldn’t believe what she was saying…It’s been just a few hours since they’ve arrived and she felt home.

Where is home?

Home is where you feel the peace…the silent message of your soul, telling you that you belong…

Some journeys in our life are long and full of questions to which we can never find the answers…some quests are short and surprisingly wise.

What we sometimes fail to see it’s that the journey it’s always there…it’s our own way of finding our destiny…our home.

…and there are a few journeys where we are just silent travellers and we let ourselves be taken to where we should be…the choice it’s not always ours.

Note from the author

This month I’ve tried to tell four different stories linked to one place, ‘a tree’…

The idea behind it was to show how everything around us it’s linked…how emotions and moments of our lives are connected. From the young love which wants to become eternal, the writer looking for inspiration to the pain of a memory and the discovery that we all belong somewhere…each and every story has one thing in common…a place in time, that lives because it holds destinies and dreams of everyone that left a mark while following a journey.

Story 3

A memory

“The time you feel lonely is the time you most need to be by yourself”

The sun wasn’t as warm as earlier…she could feel the wind playing through her hair as she was walking up the hill.

It’s been years since she was back and somehow this place looked the same, nothing seemed to change …everything was like a frozen motion picture.

She believed that time had stopped and no matter what she’s done while being away, it was completely insignificant.

She remembered all the reasons for leaving…she was curious, the world seemed to be too large and too exciting…she wanted more for herself…she wanted to discover what’s beyond that large field of yellow flowers, that always looked infinite…

So after many conversations with her parents she decided it was best for everyone if she would study abroad, maybe work a couple of years and just forget…

…yes, forget…

There’s only so many reasons one would suddenly decide that being far away from loved ones is the best choice…most of the times we are running from something much worse like guilt or pain…questions to which we do not have the answers…a broken heart that cannot truly heal in the presence of its sword.

Years went by and life has taken its course…she’s seen the world and it was beautiful, she’s graduated and she felt proud…happy, sometimes…but she stopped feeling, her heart never really healed as she’s imagined it would.

Life it’s not always how you plan it to be…the loss never seemed to leave her, the pain stayed somewhere in her soul and brought a darkness along, that she couldn’t chase away.

The painful reality was that when the love of her life died, she couldn’t be around anything that reminded her about him or them…the only way she knew how to stop the pain was running…running far away, where nothing and no one will ever seem familiar.

…without even realising, a part of her died as well that day…the part that lived and enjoyed the light, the part that allowed her to feel happiness and sadness.

She never felt lonely but she always chose to be alone…she never allowed anyone too close to see the darkness in her heart…to see that she was incapable of giving anything.

Today, she remembered that old tree on the hill she used to go to, whenever she felt the world was too much…when she just wanted a little bit of silence…when she wanted to be alone.

Even if nothing has changed in this town…she didn’t belong, it wasn’t hers anymore, but she still had that tree, that felt like home.

She managed to get to the top right about the time of sundown…the sky exploded in all the shades of red and orange and it looked like the earth is becoming one with the sky.

She set down and leaned against the tree…it was like a sweet touch of someone she once knew and for the very first time, she felt the most lonely person in the world.

…she was feeling lonely…

Her hands touched the trunk of the tree and between all the names carved into it, she found his…and everything she ever wanted to forget…everything she ever wanted to run from…they all came back to her.

…she cried and she cried like never before…

After so many years of hiding from the true experience of loss and loneliness, she felt flooded by all these emotions she couldn’t explain…

Her heart somehow felt whole again…she couldn’t take her hands of the carving because that would mean she is letting go of him…of them…of all the memories.

Even then, the feeling of loneliness didn’t disappear…as she felt closer to him, she felt more and more alone…because that was the harsh truth…she was alone, he would never come back to her…but the memories, the feelings she locked away for so long…would live on forever.

That meaningless carving in the trunk of an old tree it’s now a memory that she would always come back to, whenever she feels she’s drifting again towards darkness or just to remember him.

The writer:

“Sometimes loneliness it’s not such a bad thing….being alone can teach us how to feel again…and feeling anything is the first step we take back to the world…back to our destiny”
